Garbo Wow!

Am I really the only one that wants to post about this film? I saw it for the first time on DVD yesterday. The quality of the reproduction was a bit scratchy and I thought it was going to be quite a trial just to watch it. But after a while you forget about that side of things as you become engrossed in Garbo and Nagel. The love scene in this film was really quite sizzling.

Yay! A response to my post. It was rather good, wasn't it?

Garbo and Nagel did have great chemistry in The Mysterious Lady. After A Woman of Affairs, Lady is my second favorite Garbo silent. Her acting is amazing. Just watch the scene when after a happy day out with Nagel when she is standing at the window and waving good-bye to him. With Max's entrance, the change in eye expression from love to contempt and her posture alteration tells us immediately that all is not good.

Plus, this Garbo film has a happy ending. So nice for a change.

She was brilliant. It so nice to mave so many of her movies now available on DVD. Still hoping for some more though.

I thought the quality of the film was superb for the most part, the film's scratches and wear are easy to ignore, sharp and detailed for much of the time and aside from the first chapter [first couple minutes] being scratchy, The Mysterious Lady was restored quite nicely and from a technical aspect, this film is visually stunning in various aspects as well. Truly a fascinating and beautifully crafted film and though it never quite seems to know what it wants to be, it moves around with such grace and style that one finally doesn't care. I loved the quick tracking shots zeroing in on actors' faces, superimposed images and tense cross-cutting during the court-martial scene. This is Fred Niblo simply on the top of his game and he stays ever true to the rhythm of the moment.

I think Garbo is absolutely stunning and radiantly sexy in this. No wonder she was so popular.

I very much agree with all the positive comments regarding this very fine film; it's an excellent example of why I love silent film as it succeeds in creating a wonderful and engaging dream world.

Great stuff!

Just saw (most of) this on TCM last night. Totally enthralled (as usual) by Garbo. Had only seen her with Gilbert (hot!) but she and Nagel run a very close (hot!) second. Want to get a copy of this and really enjoy it!
