Anyone know if the character in the Batman comics was patterned from this movie?

It would've been nice to seen to see him play the first Joker in the Batman movie serials of the early 1940s

The Joker's based on this character in appearance only. The character's themselves aren't at all similar. Conrad Veidt's character is never really happy.

Conrad Veidt's character is never really happy.
Or cruel. I think Gwynplaine was happy at the end of the film though.
