I'm fairly sure that the only way this film is currently available is in actual film format (8mm? 16mm? Not sure), and it costs a terrible sum to rent. Sorry.

I certainly understand when a studio wants to protect films that it shows on TV on a regular basis or sells via DVD. However, "Lights of New York" is never shown on TV, and does not exist now nor has it ever existed in any home video format. TCM, whose parent company Time-Warner owns the rights to the film, used to show it late at night on occasion. Now it reserves that space for D- films from the 70's like "Roller Boogie". I kid you not, TCM actually showed that turkey last week. For that reason, it is beyond me why Warner Home Video guards any youtube or other distribution of this film like it is a precious jewel. WHV, if it is so precious to you, please release it on DVD and I will purchase it!

P.S. All that ever existed of Lights of New York in home video is a fragment on the Dawn of Sound laserdisc circulated in the early 90's. Since this was the first all-talking picture it deserves to be on DVD in its entirety.

Yes--TCM DID show "Roller Boogie" but that was part of it's Underground series. That shows no budget films from the 1930s on up--usually films that are so bad they're good. That's only on Friday nights though. The rest of the week they usually show good older films. Heck, late Sunday night is reserved for silents! But I do agree this should be available on DVD. A friend of mine did see a special screening of it at his college in the 1980s. He said it was one of the WORST films he ever saw--it was only interesting for historical purposes. Still--I'd like to see it. Maybe TCM might show it again...

Bestvideo.com has copies for sale, believe it or not. It's where I got mine.

There are clips of it on one of the Dawn of Sound Laser Disc boxed sets, also.

You can now get this movie from http://www.vintagefilmbuff.com/All-Classic-Movies-s/1.htm. This is an important historical film since it was the the first all-talking feature film. It grossed over a million dollars upon its release. This film all so helped define the gangster melodramas that were to become the bread and butter of the Warner's studio in the 1930's. The popularity of this film ended the silent era more so than its more famous part-talkie predecessor, the Jazz Singer. Unfortunately, all these facts are ignored.

It's now on YouTube (complete)
