Just watched this...

This is a truly spectacular film! As usual Emil Jannings gives a great performance! Definately deserved that Oscar! Saw him in "Faust", "The Last Laugh", and "Waxworks". I also recommend those films.

Its's alive! It's alive!

Yes, this was quite an achievement. I felt some aspects of the plot were left unresolved, such as what happened to Evelyn Brent's character, and it would have been interesting to know more of the General's road from Russia to Hollywood as well as the film director's transformation from revolutionary to movie maker. Still, Von Sternberg's direction was brilliant and drew out as much as possible from the story, given its implausibility. And, whatever one may think of him as a man given his future as a Nazi (Sternberg writes amusingly in his autobiography of the extreme difficulty he had with him on this picture), Emil Jannings proves again what a magnificent silent film actor he was, one of the greatest.
