Longer than it needed to be

Why was this over 2 hours long? It really dragged. They really didn't even need to add in the part of his daughter marrying. Some parts felt like they were actually trying to lengthen them. Needed editing, big time.

reply

Yes, I think so too. It was far too long.

reply

Yeah, it was long, especially for a silent. When I think about it, some silents like 'Wings' were pretty long, but more exciting. But I think the daughter marrying and going off emphasized his loneliness so I'm glad that part was there. I just think almost every scene could have been truncated a bit. Can you imagine general audiences of today sitting through this. Everybody would get up and leave! In 1929 the pace was a lot slower and sitting in a movie was a treat, so I don't think the audiences of the day minded.

The film that I watched, part of the UK "Early Hitchcock Collection", is only 94 minutes long. Was anything of note cut out?

reply

The 129-minute version of this film has been recorded at the wrong speed. The 97-minute version is the correct one, and has nothing missing. I have copies from several different manufacturers; they all contain the same footage.

reply

Thanks for the explanation.

I think there must be a scene with the barmaid missing. They seem to hit it off but after that we don't see her again until the montage scene where she is haranguing him but we don't know why.

reply

I think you would notice if 97 minutes was slowed down enough to stretch into 129 minutes. That can't be just a speed thing...

reply

It really was, and I feel the film was at its draggiest during the scenes at Thirza's party. I started out enjoying this part, but then I thought it was never going to end.

reply

endless!! Oh my god , it could have easily been done in 80 minutes! Help was that a hard watch.

reply

I like silent films,, but this one is 40-60 minutes longer than it needed to be,, I darn near fell asleep several times trying to watch it I was so bored.

are you going to bark all day little doggie,, or are you going to bite

reply

Yes, it did seem to be longer than it needed. I think having the daughter's wedding helped show the passing of time. They wouldn't want to make him an unsympathetic character who was looking to find a new wife before his first wife's body was cold. But I was surprised that the scene at the fireplace where he decides to ask Minta to marry him wasn't the end. I felt all that came after could have been cut without affecting the movie.
