I watched this for the third time recently and I noticed something... during the first scene, Buster is trying to take a picture of a man who is posing rather comically. Scores of people suddenly come into the frame for the parade and Buster is pushed here, there and everywhere. During the one of first shots of Buster when the crowd appears.. watch his face. He actually cracks a smile!
shareThere are a lot of smiles in the Arbuckle films. The most genuine is in "The Cook", when Roscoe cuts the strand of spaghetti and it smacks the other two guys in the faces. There are also two fleeting and faint but beautiful smiles early in "The Saphead".
There's a clip of "This is Your Life" in which they bring Louise Dresser out (the actress Buster's baby sister was named after). Buster sees her and just smiles. I'd love to see a smile like that when I walked in!
Oh yes, definitely! I love all those smiles... especially the beautiful smiles in 'This is Your Life'. A smile of genuine affection, it's a lovely moment.
The smile and laugh in 'Coney Island' is also a great thing to see ;)
But as far as the 'The Cameraman' goes it was definitely the most surprising. I just wasn't expecting it in one of his feature films!
