why was it banned...

(*spoilers!*) It was banned for some of the subtle undercurrents hinting at "impropriety" for the time. The character of Lulu moves through the first half of the film with the naive vanity befitting a beautiful, charismatic young woman first realizing the world falls at her feet; she likewise engages in the appropriate flirtations and tantrums. It seems common knowledge between characters is that Lulu has worked as an escort and is now "living in sin" with her wealthy donor, although she offically doesn't enter prostitution until the end of the film. Mostly, there are hints of multiple explorations of sexuality, even though no actual sexual situations occur (with the exception of some rowdy foreplay involving thrashing around and biting of hands). "Pandora's Box" mostly revolves around sexual jealousy and its closeness to violence, but how this subject plays out in the film may come as a surprise to audiences.

The amazing power of her sexuality is how she was able to get the lesbian who obviously loved her to seduce the trapeze artist who was blackmailing her for money she didn't have. And then for her to give the money the lesbian gave her to her love to gamble away seems to indicate that maybe she really loved him as much as she could love anyone.
The sexual piccadillos that are hinted at in this movie indicate that she was quite a 'rounder'.
But I thought Jack the Ripper lived much earlier than this era.

Ditto. Though nothing really happens onscreen, there is a lot of implied sexuality in this film surrounding Lulu. In 1929, in a motion picture, that was probably considered widely inappropriate, even though you never actually 'see' anything.

¡Buena suerte!

I know this is an older post, but the play this film was based on was written in 1894, so the Ripper was huge then.
