Reminds me of a Twilight Zone episode

It has that classic last-minute "twist".

Unfortunately that also makes it extremely predictable. I already knew that, after the arms were removed, the woman would reject him & choose somebody else.

Kinda ruined the suspense.

It's somewhat similar to the Twilight Zone episone, The Silence, in which a man has his vocal chords removed to win a bet. Just like Chaney's character, he gets nothing.

When a movie is made in 1927, especially one as 'cultified' as this, chances are you will already know what it's about. You have had 80+ years to sort that out. :)

The TZ episode may well have been inspired by THE UNKNOWN. I thought that was a really cool episode. :)

I think everyone who has seen this movie will be left with a lasting impression.

I'd say it's more like an episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents, which had crime stories with morbid twist endings. The Twilight Zone dealt with science fiction and the supernatural, which The Unknown—for all its weird atmosphere—does not.

Another poster mentions The Silence, which was a very atypical Twilight Zone episode. It seemed more suited to Alfred Hitchcock Presents itself.

Ahhhhhh but the episode the silence doesn't deal with science fiction or the supernatural one of the few and still stands up over the years just like the unknown.
