shareI just rented a DVD-R from CineFile Video (http://cinefilevideo.com/) in Santa Monica. I haven't got a chance to watch it yet, but the print seems to be in decent quality considering it is about 75 years old. I'd guess it's transferred from a 16mm reduction print. I'd love to see the Silent Movie Theatre screen it as well. Someone is selling a DVD copy on Ebay or you can pick up a VHS copy from Movies Unlimited http://www.moviesunlimited.com/).
shareGreat news,
in the January 2009 issue of Classic Images, editor Bob King reports a recent conversation he had with Robert Osborne of Turner Classic Movies. On page 20, Mr. Osborne says that upon the conclusion of TCM's current 4 year lease of Columbia Pictures, TCM has a lease on Paramount and Universal classics to take their place!
This will undoubtably include scores of films making their premiere on TV like Underworld.
Classic Images promises more to information to follow in subsequent issues.
Woot!
Choosing peace requires greater courage.
Kim Hendrickson of the Criterion Collection has confirmed that Criterion will be releasing it, but I don't think an official release date has been set.
shareGreat news about Criterion handling the DVD. They have done a great job on some other von Sternberg films.
shareCriterion Collection is expected to release this in 2010 according to this article: http://theplaylist.blogspot.com/2009/08/exclusive-criterion-collection-unveils.html
shareI know your original post was made years ag, but I was reading the board and wondered if you have seen the Criterion DVD edition already? I got it from Netflix and watched it last night. Criterion did their usual great job. What a film! Beautifully filmed, acted and directed.
I wonder if a Blu Ray is in the works?
Had the great good fortune to see it tonight as part of the AFI Silver Theatre's 'Noir City' film noir series, with live soundtrack by Alloy Orchestra.
"I say, you move, and you're dead!" "And I say, I'm dead and I move..."
Criterion Collection has an excellent DVD (2010) that includes alternate soundtracks by Robert Israel and The Alloy Orchestra.
Included is a UCLA voice-over bio of the director with stills of him and many film collaborators.
It's also on YouTube.
