Mona Ray's Topsy was done poorly.

That was very annoying. How could they cast Mona Ray? I mean, what did she do that made them say "We have our Topsy"? What was it? I don't get it. Topsy is a great character. Her back story is that Augustine St. Clare got her at age nine to give to his abolitionist Cousin Ophelia as a spoof. Topsy's previous owners were very cruel and constantly beat her. It made her very tough, cold and indifferent. St. Clare knew his Cousin would have her hands full trying to raise Topsy. He was calling her out for her abolitionist ways and was challenging her as a Christian to save poor Topsy. He managed to get an abolitionish to own a slave. Ophelia took the challenge and even force him to immediately sign Topsy over, just in case something happen to him. If they ever remake this movie, I hope the stick to the book and make all the actors read the book before the cast them to a role.

Mona Ray's portrayal of Topsy was VERY annoying. At times, she was, of course, genuinely moving (and even appears to have been shedding real tears, at such times), though most of her performance was so extremely over the top and thoroughly artificial that it really was hard to take.

I agree. I can live with a white actress was playing a black character (even though there were black kids in the film). However Ray was simply horrible.

I've only seen her in this and Li'l Abner. She wasn't good in either film.
