This is a perfect film

After watching this last night I must say that it's a flawless film. It's a story about the love of two people, as simple as that. It says the most basic truth about life in the most disarming way possible. It's beautiful, right and true.

If you don't get it, then that's your problem.

"What do you phaggots want?"

reply

Oh yes, but filmed by someone for whom love was rather a thing between two men. Therefor in all his movies, there isn't any great actress, and here it's a child women. Notice also that he refers always to love through the child they have, the child is the symbol, and the facility for him showing love. Women don't mean anything to Murnau, so he can hardly render love. Look at all his other movies, Phantom, The Finances, the City Girl, Vogelöd. Never a women is the center of the plot.

Who would blame him ? He likes men, i not.. I don't expect him to fake a love he isn't made for, but don't expect me to adhere to his cinema.

Compare with Pabst's in case doubt. For example, Abwege.

Too bad for you. By the way, I thought Janet Gaynor was great in Sunrise.

"Notice also that he refers always to love through the child they have, the child is the symbol, and the facility for him showing love."

That did not happen in Sunrise.

"Women don't mean anything to Murnau"

Good. Women are annoying anyway. I don't blame Murnau for being a homosexual. If I was a guy, I'd be gay too.

"and here it's a child women"

What's a 'child women'? You sure you were sober when you wrote this?

In City Girl there is a major female character. Same for Phantom and Sunrise. In fact, you are forgetting that in the latter two, there are "good" and "bad" women at the center of each plot. Sunrise with the wicked City Woman and the good Wife, and Phantom with the stupid gold digger that Lorenz showers with gifts, and the decent girl he ends up with in the end. In each movie you have two actresses acting out the good and not-so-good qualities of women. That's not enough for you?

The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had.

"and here it's a child women"

Yes i was sober, and don't become personal, we will avoid hysteria. I'm not native english speaker, - in french we say femme-enfant.

Anyway, women are not annoying, just wonderful. The only thing i would correct about what i wrote is that i like men too, but not that way.. H. Fonda, V. Mature... and so many others.

When you say there is a great actress in the City Girl, ok and even once she is nicely portrayed, when sitting at the table and looking through the window, but that doesn't cancel the fact she isn't the center of the movie. The center is the father-son relation ship. And there is very little *tenderness* between her ans the son, remember at the bar when they meet, this is rather a friendship that a love affair. Then there is the worker group under the roof that the camera enjoy filming ! All this little odds... I was not aware about this with Pasolini.

And Sunrise is so unbelievable, never a women would trust a guy who just attempt to kill her, i think he has no empathy to the story. For me there is something wrong, and something that hurts me.

The phantom, first he lost the girl he would love and never see again, and then he find another one who isn't nice to him, if i recall, it's a total disappointment, a mess, as the title suggest. But why would you expect him even to show interest for intersexual relationship when he isn't made for that ? As if i would bother doing a movie about homosexuality no, because i can't ! So don't try to prove what can't be, and has no reason to be ! You are also just denying his singularity.

I would ever save from Murnau, The last man, for sure ! But maybe not much more.

Yes, Phantom wasn't the best, but it wasn't the worst. For being Murnau's first movie, at least it flowed and didn't bore me to sleep. Not one I would watch again though. Lorenz was a dumb weakling and went to prison before realizing who it was he loved. And most of the women in that movie were beyond annoying. That girl he fell for just wanted to be lavished with gifts, and the other one, the money lender, I think that was actually his aunt, she was TERRIBLE. And then she died. Good riddance!

Are you asking why would Murnau make a movie about heterosexual relationships when he himself was gay?

Why don't you try looking at Sunrise from a different perspective. The man is a cheat who realizes how wrong he was, and he changes. He repents. And the wife forgives him. She could have been a terrible, unforgiving vindictive harpy, but she wasn't.

If you want movies where women are at the center of the plot, watch If These Walls Could Talk part 1 and 2. Women and their abortions, and women and their lesbian relationships. Can't get more WOMAN than that.

And I think the word you're looking for is a woman-child.

"You look at me and you see your past.
Is that the reason why you're running so fast?"

Thanks for your reply, by-the-way i found another translation, baby doll

Pasolini was also gay, and Pedro Almodovar sometimes shows gay relationship, and i could very well follow that...and wasn't bored.

However, Sunrise with its homicide intention is way over the top, or just about masochism : Only a masochist mind can follow what's happening. She wants to be killed, that's why she can forgive, if you look at it in depth; loving even the hatred of the other, that isn't just love, - it goes beyond.

No, baby doll is actually a positive, favorable, sometimes endearing term.

I've looked at the movie in depth, which is something you obviously have never done.

And now I have read your comment in depth, and I realize it's Bull Sh!t.

I'm not the only one who can't follow the plot in this point, see the board. And stay polite.

To make things clear, i do absolutely not care about this movie and wont read further replies.

PS : My favorite movie is Sunset Blvd.

That's an interesting point lisztnet. The female did seem a bit childish. For me it made the story even more touching.

I think I will watch those films you mentioned.

reply

You're right, Raindog. It is a perfect film.

I have shown it to many friends, and the only two who didn't like it DID have personal problems. One, irked me by saying half way through, "How Long IS this movie?! She died of a substance abuse problem a few years later.

I always think people's reactions to SUNRISE as a sort of barometer of their mental/emotional health.

It is certainly a masterpiece, but I won't call it flawless. I take ossue with how easily the wife forgives the guy after he nearly drowns her. I'm open to melodrama, but my suspension of disbelief can only go so far.

9/10

Best silent film is The Passion of Joan of Arc.

reply

Yup, pretty much!

reply

Not only is it one of the greatest silent films, it's one of the greatest movies ever made, period.
Sublime.

I agree.

Especially the cinematography and art direction are stunning. I still don't know how they were able to do some shots...

Indeed, that's why it works so well, it's Universal, it appeals to every person's heart and sensibility, in the simplest, most direct way, with spotless acting, photography, design, storytelling, music... everything.

-No. I've got nobody else to remember.

reply

Agreed. Modern psychological quibbles are just those: quibbles. Let's not confuse the improbable with the impossible. It's about divine forgiveness, on a level close to apocalypse, and sells that so well that it melts away caveats.
