Intro Music

Does anyone know what the music is that is played at the intro of Sunrise? It is the first few bars of a very famous symphonic piece or a violin concerto. I think it's Tchaikovsky, Dvorak, Brahms, or someone from the Romantic period. Any ideas?

The opening credits as you know are silent. Do you mean the piece that begins when the names of actors appear? What scene in specific do you mean?

It's been so long since your posting that you've probably died, but if you're still with us: the film begins with the opening bars of Les Preludes, by Franz Liszt.

Herbert von Karajan does a swell performance on a Deutsche Gramophone two-fer called Liszt Orchestral Works.

Kevin Brownlow used the grand finale of this piece in the Germany episode of his documentary Cinema Europe.

As to the film titles being silent until the "Cast of Characters" appears: It was not that way in the original release. The sound track is missing from the first portion of the film. On some earlier releases of the film this silent portion has been filled in with another selection from the score. Hugo Riesenfeld, who arranged the score, of course used several classical selections. He also used the talents of band leader Paul Whiteman for the dance sequences at the fairgrounds. In addition, he wrote some original themes for the film. All in all, it is a remarkable score for a remarkable film.
