Was she a prostitute?

I don't know if I got that right, but she tells her relatives she hadn't kept herself decent, and then her sister is taken away by the cops (alongside some other women). There's even a moment when the male lead says something like "If you don't like what you do you're not bad", even though it isn't specified what it is she does that would make her bad, so that got me thinking if we were to assume she was a prostitute...

Hi, Felipenor! On the release of Heaven that came out on the Murnau, Borzage & Fox boxed set, the commentary during the film said that Diane was "a hooker in training" (this was merely implied, rather than emphasized during the film). In other words, her psychotic, abusive, alcoholic sister was forcing her into a life she wanted no part of, which is why she told her uncle they hadn't kept themselves "clean and decent"! BTW, this is my absolute favourite movie of all time!!!!! ^_^ Glad you enjoy it, too!!!!!

"I'm not used to being happy. It's funny, it hurts." Janet Gaynor as Diane, 7th Heaven, 1927.
