it is entertaining to watch, and i did laugh out loud a few times, and was amused many--though i'm not sure they were all intended the way i got them. LOOKS great on TCM, and the score does a lot for the movie. you would not have heard this in 1929 at your local movie house----piano, brass, violins--- i don't know how much that adds.

reply

I too, give the movie two thumbs-up!

TCM has scheduled it again for Monday, August 3, 2009 at 6:00 AM Eastern Time. It is the first film in an all-day Davies festival.

The music that accompanied silent movies depended upon the theater and could range from a piano to a full orchestra. My grandmother played an organ and my grandfather played the violin at a movie theater in Buffalo. The organ my grandmother had was, I think, made in Germany (I haven't seen it since around 1967), but had 3 different keyboards. I don't know if she had any sheet music from any of the movies though.

reply

Yes, I have. I thought it was pretty good!

I'm taping TCM's Marion-athon, but got up to watch "The Red Mill" anyway! I remember when they showed it a while ago (last year?) I watched it with a 5 year old girl who was enthralled. Even the nintendo generation can appreciate a silent.

Yes, sir, I'm going to do nothing like she's never been done before!

I just saw this movie and really enjoyed it. I particularly liked some of the captions/subtitles that were so funny. Especially the one about two things bringing the character back to the town-- a boat and a train. LOL!
I also loved the physical comedy. When she was trying to set the ironing board up it really cracked me up. I've dealt with objects that needed to be set up similarly and they weren't cooperating so I could relate. I loved when she threw it across the room and it set itself up-- then the look on her face was priceless.

Did you like her applying the mud masque? When she took it off her face was all done up in make-up.

I watched it last night for the very first time in my life, and totally loved it. The print quality on the DVD is amazing, like it was filmed yesterday. So crisp and clear! And the movie itself, WOW, one of the funniest I've ever seen, up there and as funny as Show People and The Patsy.
