Stanley Kubricks opinion on this film


In 1968, Kubrick said:

“I found it to be really terrible. As far as story and performance goes it’s a very crude picture.”

I wonder which version he saw, and if he changed his mind when/if he saw the restored 1981 version.

No way he saw a restored version. No wonder he hated it. Since a of Kubricks movies (since The Killing) are based on other works, I imagine his Napoleon was at least inspired by this movie. Like this movie, Kubrick wanted to focus on a younger Napoleon.
