Why are silent films soo good

i caught a few of Lon Chaney's movies on TCM today and i just have to ask...why are they soo good? i mean i could barely take my eyes off the screen wen watching Mr. wu and The monster was pretty gud too.

And it's not just becuz of Lon Chaney. The other actors are good too. Maybe it's the music? Or the entertainment? OR maybe it's because they're silent movies. IDK.

does anyone know why?

I don't know why but I agree with you on not being to stop watching silent films. I got hooked on silent films when TCM was regularly doing "Silent Sundays" at midnight. I think it's like reading an actual book. You fill in the blanks with voices and how good you think the actors move the story because the word cards come & go so quickly. Not to mention how sparse they can be. I'm also enchanted with the years the films were made. The teens through the late 30's. So much went into making the film. I think about the audience in the movie houses. I think about how cheap it is now but it was a luxury to many and how about those that still never saw a silent film back then. It's just another world. I love that people worked hard to preserve this form of entertainment.

"Mr Wu" is on right now at 3:15 pm EST on April 1st. This is the 3rd time I've seen this wonderful film.

I believe it is because before sound - movies were a big deal for people to go and spend the day. Our society demanded more than these days and without sound, you had to develop characters and run a plot without being told about it.

These days, movies bail on plot or character development because our shallow society only needs car crashes, 3-D effects or lot of T&A to get people to see them

Sort of agree. Seen plenty of big budget SFX movies that sucked because of poor plots, bad acting etc. I find 3-d effects etc. can turn a great movie into an awesome movie but you still need good plots and characters. I do not think this represents society, merely directors and producers that think SFX = box office gold.
