Was that a fox hunt???

Can someone answer a question for me?

When Anna and Vronsky are at the Grand Duchess's country home for the weekend, there is a scene that looks like a fox hunt...people on horses following a pack of dogs chasing something.

But what are they chasing?

To me, it didn't look like a fox. It looked like a large dog -- a German Shepherd, maybe. But that seems unlikely.

So...was it a fox after all?

It is suposedly a wolf hunt, are per Vronsky says to Anna during the Waltz sequence:

"I hope you are going up
to the Grand Duke's for
the wolf hunt."

The question I'd like to ask is, why a wolf? A fox would make more sense, wouldn't it? Although I totally understand your confusion.

Yes it was a wolf. Perhaps there are more wolves in St.Petersburg than foxes. You can see the poor dead animal (wolf) across a rider's horse, when the hunt is over and they are presumably returning home. Garbo looks a good horsewoman for she also rides in "Queen Christina". I believe Garbo used to go horse riding with Mercedes De Acosta in California. She certainly could not have afforded it in her native Stockholm.
