***SPOILERS*** Which Ending?

There are two endings, the upbeat American ending (Anna & Vronsky get together at the end) and the International ending (Anna walking in front of a moving train). Which is the better ending?

I personally prefer the happy ending since its the only time Gilbert and Garbo are both alive at the end of the film. Also, this film has so little to do with the original novel, (the Military Race Sequence, Anna's reunion with her son on his birthday, and the ending with her death) are the only scenes in the film that relate to Tolstoi's novel. Perhaps when Sergei is tell her about the ride in the garden episode but apart from this only four of the characters' names and the fact that it is set in Russia, (and for four minutes in Italy, another close to Tolstoi scene) there are NO similarities except the ones I just discribed.

I vote for the Happy Ending,(its also the one in better condition).

The happy ending is what I prefer, although I'd be a little concerned for the kid given how jealous Gilbert's character was of him earlier in the film.

I have only just discovered John Gilbert and must see all of his movies now. This is the second one I've seen and I didn't know there was an alternate ending. There's a lot of black space (maybe a minute or two) in between the happy ending and the tragic one, and no explanation. It just appears. I missed the tragedy the first time and was shocked to see it appear on the second viewing. Which is why I came here to see what it was all about.

I prefer the happy ending, because I want to see Vronsky be a happy man. Having her jump in front of a train is just too dark for this movie. Her death doesn't resolve anything. Literature does that. Sometimes I don't like literature. :)

I did find his feelings about her child to be cold hearted and cruel, but his screen presence more than makes up for it. He's just splendid and I knew he would come around. At least I hoped so.

These early films are so simple, yet stunning. I love the idea that Garbo and Gilbert can be in the same room fully clothed and be accused of adultery. It is so clean. I love it.

I Love this film and the other I saw with both of them "Flesh and the Devil."
