I recorded it on TCM a few months back and just watched it with my wife. Yes, it's the usual Lloyd formula - Wimpy guy in glasses finds courage and saves the day and gets the girl. This is expertly crafted physical comedy, mixed with a little romance and schmaltz. The question is whether "The Kid Brother" (10/10) or "The Freshman" (10/10) is Lloyd's best - I'd give it to the latter (but that's a tough choice). By the way, Carl Davis's score for this is great.

I enjoyed it too. I saw it on Hulu Plus as part of the Criterion Collection, and they had a fine print of it. I enjoyed many of the gags, especially Harold pretending to be Mary behind the curtain with his brothers, and the entire ending sequence; also the inventive camerawork, on board the ship especially. Harold saying goodbye to Mary as he climbs the tree is one of the most charming scenes ever!

Agreed, that tree climbing was great and the whole film was awesome!
