The wooden hammers!?

Just a short question: Can somebody please tell me what the people at Coffee Dan's were doing with those wooden hammers?
It was in the scene right after the intertitles that said "Years later - - and three thousand miles from home" just before Al Jolson sings "Dirty Hands, Dirty Face". Is it some kind of game?

Thank you for your answers!

Night clubs of that era and into the 40's often had those hammers on the tables for folks to "applaud" with but more importantly to "join in" the playing of the music, at the bandleaders discretion. Very common.
