Two questions...

I got a bit confused with the scene where Johnnie is chasing his stolen train in another train...wondered why he didn't take soldiers from his own side (I presume) in pursuit with him.

Question 1: It's the scene where he jumps over the link between two carriages and then removes the pin keeping the two carriages together. Was wondering what Johnnie expected to accomplish without any backup once he reached his train...he would have realised that the Union army stole his train...so it's not like he expected to be able to take the train off of them, right?

Also, the Rebel uniform that he stole had 3 touching stripes...that's for corporal, right? So he goes from a fake corporal to a real lieutenant at the end, right?

Question 2: Since Wikipedia mentions there being different versions of this movie, I do wonder if you can tell which version your watching by the music used in the movie. In the version I saw, you could often hear "The teddy bears picnic" being played on piano, and when the Union army appears at one point, there's sort of a heroic score...are they indicators of a later version of the movie?

Talk very fast. Hope something good happens. Take the credit.

As to question 1, he pulled the pin between the flatbed and boxcar behind it so the engine would only need to pull the flatbed. Why the pin between the flatbed and tender was disconnected was never explained.
