Best Picture Nomination

I wonder, is this the only documentary to ever be nominated for best picture oscar?

reply

It couldn't be a documentary, could it? It felt too staged.

Robert Osbourne spoke tonight about this and said that a few of those sequences were staged. The elephant stampede of the village was really a miniature village with a host of baby elephants doing the stampeding. Weird, right?

I don't know, but maybe this movie should have won. I only saw the film once, but it was pretty good!

The definition of "documentary" in 1927 would be a lot looser than what we consider a documentary today. However, if the trivia is to be believed, his wife in the film was played by his friend's wife. If someone is "playing" someone else, I would refuse to categorize it as a documentary.

This may come across as a bit nit-picky, but technically "Chang" was not nominated for Best Picture. It was nominated for Unique and Artistic Picture, which was separate from the award for Outstanding Picture. The Unique and Artistic Picture category only existed that first year.
