the long count and another boxing take off

Several commenters have noted that the scene where Stan refuses to go to a neutral corner while his opponent is out cold, and the opponent has time to recover, is a sly dig at the Dempsey-Tunney fight known as the long count fight. In the second round of the movie fight, when Stan is knocked out, he lies on his back with one leg crossed over the other. I suggest that this is a reference to the Jess Willard-Jack Johnson fight in 1915 when Johnson was knocked down and lay on his back with one glove held up seemingly to shield his eyes from the sun while the referee counted him out. It's still disputed, 95 years later, whether Johnson took a dive, but I don't think Stan did.
