greta was great!

This was my first silent film years back when it was shown on TCM as part of a Greta Garbo marathon. Instantly I was hooked on silent films. I was mesmerized by the love story and the seemingly strange and different style of acting that is so prevalent in the early days of cinema. It is over the top loveliness and, for me, a wonderful gem. Wonderfully directed and great cinematography. I could go on and on! What was your first silent and what was your first impression of that movie?

Can't remember what was my first silent. Some Lon Chaney movie, most likely.

However, I saw "Torrent" last night for the first time and totally loved it. I didn't know what to expect from a Warner Archive Collection DVD, but it turned out to be of great, very clear print quality 95% of the time. Previously, I had only seen the three Garbo silents that were released as part of her Signature Collection, and now I'm so glad that we're able to watch more of her work from the silent era.

It's incredible (in a good way, of course) that she was only 20 when filmed this, and gave such an amazing, fascinating, sensual, classy performance.
