Why has no one made a remake of this?

Never understood this?

It would be sacrilege!

There has been made a movie inspired by it, though: Metoroporisu (2001), which has some similarities in building designs, a female robot, a "mad" scientist, etc. I don't like it myself, but if you haven't you might want to check it out yourself.

reply

I was going to use the word blasphemous, but sacrilege works!

reply

Because nobody can come up with a good new way to take on the story.

reply

They don't need to, we are living it.

the trudging workers in the opening scenes reminded me of the morning commute into the city.

I'm not signing anything without my lawyer.

Trivia note:

In a December 2013 interview, actor Richard Armitage said:
"I've got a big fantasy about remaking Metropolis. I don't know
that anyone will do it. I keep hinting to people about it ...."

It was remade to a certain extent. It was called THE LEGO MOVIE! 

Kidding aside, both actually follow the similar pattern. The protagonist is content with his life, that is until he meets the girl of his dreams and she in turn takes him to worlds unbeknownst to him. The father is the controller of this universe, and it is the son (with the help from the girl) who ends up becoming the chosen one or the mediator to help resolve a peaceful co-existence.

You must be joking or trolling, right?

The movie is a masterpiece, still being watched since 1927, there is absolutely no reason to remake it. And, above all, if it did, it would be a commercial failure, like Snowpiercer.

I love the film, but a remake would be welcome. Very few young people watch black & white movies. So a silent film will be forgotten. I think the story is relevant in 2015. But who would direct it? and who could star in it?

reply

So a silent film will be forgotten.

While I certainly agree that there are young people that don't watch black & white films, any of them that grow to appreciate film as they get older would watch them and attain a fondness for at least some of them, even the silent ones.

If Metropolis hasn't been forgotten in 88 years even with the advent of CGI and greenscreen, why would it be forgotten more than other any film after 88 more years? Some films are like Beethoven or Mozart they won't be forgotten. If I was going to be around in 88 years I'd wager that Metropolis will be remembered in 2103 but not a remake.

I think that people will find that every sci-fi since Metrop is a remake, just as every thriller is a version of M. That said, the denoument of Spione is one of the most rip-roaring endings I know; White Heat viewers take note.

There's the 2001 anime which is based on a 1949 manga which was heavily inspired by Metropolis. Not really sure if this counts as a remake, but I would imagine it's as close as we're likely to come to a remake. Judging by the state of most modern remakes of films from the 80's, I'm not really sure a film that's almost 90 years old would work to well for the remake treatment, if they can't get a remake of something that's 30 years old to work.

It would be like remaking the Mona Lisa.

It doesn't need to be remade. It's perfect as it is.
