The Music For This Film

I'm not sure if there are other versions of The Lodger,
but the music, I find, is basically horrible on the dvd I got.
It's the same music piece repeated many times.
Don't like it.

Which Version is this? Is it from St. Claire Vision?

reply

Yes, it's the St.Clair Vision version.

Somehow I love St. Claire Vision version of The Lodger. I think its because the music is similar to Alfred Hitchcock's Shadow of A Doubt.

The best version to get of The Lodger is the one issued by the British Film Institute (B.F.I.). It has a new score that was written especially for the film. In the mid 1990's Channel 4 gave The Lodger its network premier on British television. I still have the VHS tape that I recorded at the time. This had another score that was totally different from either the B.F.I. issue or that of St. Clair. It used contempory 1920's music. As far as I know the version that was screened by Channel 4 has never been released, which is a shame because it makes almost as good a use of music as the B.F.I. release.
The music used in the St. Clair version is Edward Elgars 'Pomp and Circumstance' if I am not mistaken.

Yeah, the score recorded by the British Film Institute was great. I also thought it was interesting that some parts of it were also used in the classic movie A Christmas Story (1983).

reply

The versions that are uploaded online have better music than the St. Clair Version.

reply

I've got the St. Clair version and while it's not the greatest soundtrack I've ever heard, I've heard a good many worse. Actually, after a while I don't even really notice it.

The only DVD release worth getting/watching of this movie is the MGM Premiere Collection one released in 2008. It includes two modern especially composed scores for the movie, of which the Ashley Irwin one (which is the "default" score on the DVD), dated 1999, is superb. It was composed-to-order for the movie, so of course suits it to a "t." The DVD features an excellent restored version of the movie and includes a number of interesting extras. If you're a fan of this movie, don't settle for any lesser DVD release of it: Definitely get the MGM Premiere Collection one! Here's the Amazon.com link to it:

http://www.amazon.com/The-Lodger-June/dp/B001JV5BIU/ref=sr_1_2?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1331894417&sr=1-2 [Only pay attention there to product reviews dated Feb. 2009 to present, and mentioning the restored version, as earlier product reviews for the movie are also included, but referring to lesser DVD releases of the movie, as on Amazon often reviews for alternate release versions of a movie get lumped together. You'll know in the reviews which ones are clearly for the MGM Premiere Collection release, as they'll all be glowing about the release's quality.]

PS: What you have is an inferior public domain copy of the movie with a pieced-together classical music "score" tacked on, culled from old public domain recordings. Public domain silent movie releases typically have such "scores" tacked onto them.

For the record, a newly restored version with a new score specially composed by Nitin Sawhney has just been shown across the UK and will be coming out on DVD in September 2012. I saw it last night and it's pretty good.

The new soundtrack, mentioned by another poster, scored by Nitin Sawhney is amazing. I watched the film with it and it totally suits the feel of the film although there are two tracks that features modern vocals and this caused some humorous responses from the audience. I highly recommend this if/when the BFI release a 2012 DVD of the film.

Yes, the Nitin Sawhney score is pretty good. When the two sections of 'modern song' come onto his soundtrack it is a little distracting for a moment or two, but on reflection I actually think it added something good to the experience.

Do try to see this version if you are a fan of The Lodger.

The first use of the modern vocal song was way out of touch with the scenes and I was thinking if it was a mistake or something but apart from that it was a very nice soumdtrack and it is available on Spotify as well
