when joe the detective sees The Lodgers footprint....

Joe sees a footprint and it make him think of all the pieces of the puzzle coming together. Obviously, he draws the wrong conclusion about the Lodger ( or does he?) but my question is why does the footprint trigger joes memories of the Lodger? How was that a trigger?

anyone?

Joe had already been put on the case by the police, and he probably recognized the footprint from one of the previous crime scenes (even though he came to the wrong conclusion).
