Narrative? What Narrative?!

If you enjoy the creepy imagery and things like that, I can understand. As far as a story, how on earth can you follow it?! I see synopses of the story that mention all sorts of details that are just not present on the screen.

Wikipedia mentions "Showings in 1920s Japan would have included live narration by a storyteller or benshi". Apparently, this is crucial to understanding anything at all. Had I known this, I would have avoided watching this. Surely, the experience today with no narration at all is just a pile of frightening and disjointed images. I expect more from a film.

Also, why release this as a silent? Why not have an explanation about the benshi at the beginning and release it with appropriate, yet simple, narration?

That narration maybe long lost to time as this film was thought lost and then rediscovered in the 70s. Narration may help to explain the plot better but I have a feeling this is more like avant garde cinema. The real world and dream world are intersecting here as are past & present.

if the devil is 6
then God is 7
