Dance moves draw on some 'common dance vocabulary' of the 20's?

The dance moves Karl imagines (about 74 minutes in, shortly after the intertitle "Turmoil!") aren't just created de novo. They're the same as those used by the false Maria in the Yoshiwara sequence in Fritz Lang's 'Metropolis'. In both cases what's portrayed is related to illicit sex; apparently both drew on the same dance vocabulary.

The idea of a common vocabulary of dance at that time makes me wonder what else I'm missing. Perhaps the dance sequences that seem rather random (even silly:-) to us nowadays were very meaningful to the original viewers.

Can anybody shed any further light on 20's dance vocabulary in Germany?
