Great film! (spoiler)

Just saw this on TCM and thought it was great for a silent film. There was so much expression in the stars' faces. Gilber was so handsome and Garbo as always was fantastic. About the end, it surprised me. I actually thought the two men would shoot at each other, but they would miss and accidentally shoot Garbo. No, it didn't happen that way. She fell through the ice. Amazing!!!!

It's really the most visually impressive work from Clarence Brown that I've seen and it caught me completely by surprise. If you watch this film or even Ah, Wilderness! (very difficult to find these days) or Intruder in The Dust, it's quite obvious what a tremendous talent he was as a director, but he was too often caught slumming it with MGM melodrama cash projects I think.

Love flies out the door when money comes innuendo.

The look of this film is stunning and impressive. I was riveted by - among other things - the scenes shot during snowfall. Gorgeous! This is a movie that holds up extremely well to modern viewing, as it doesn't have a dated look or feel, as so very many silent and early "talkie" films do. And, of course, most importantly, the story is engrossing. I think that even young people who'd normally hate watching (and be unwilling to) a black and white movie - let alone a silent one - would be thoroughly tranfixed by this one. I've been watching and greatly enjoying silent movies for years, and this is definitely one of my top three personal favourites - very possibly even my #1! I love, too, the beautiful and touching blood brothers for life relationship that is portrayed. Lars Hanson and John Gilbert are wonderful as such.
