Need help, please, (spoilers)

I just watched the end of this, coming in at the scene right before the friends' duel. Missed all else. Was the woman a witch? What was that vial she was holding in the bed the next morning? When she drowned in the lake, (and wasn't that a shock!!), they said it was like a veil had lifted and they could see the truth. Thanks for any opinions on this.

Felicitas was holding and sniffing some sort of a smelling salt (I guess she was feeling faint or what's the term ...). If I am wrong, please inform me :)

I hate people on this board that are being smart asses without knowing the whole story or maybe haven't read a book on a subject or in this case the novel this movie is based on -- but I haven't read it myself in this case :P

I don't thing Garbo's character was a witch. There were alot of metaphors and biblical examples. But from my perspective -- 96 years after the film premiere, some of those things irritated me (Felicitas being the flat villain, the two men being better off without her, blah blah ... And let's not forget the stink-eye pastor o.O). But I guess this isn't the right thread for the topic in mind, so I'm gonna end my post right now :P

Why should she have been a witch? Watch the whole movie, you must have got the wrong idea about it...
