Horses killed in this film?

When the horses go off the land's end and into the water, was that the real death of two horses for the sake of this film? I enjoyed the film so much until that part. Too many old films killed horses. Was this one of them? Anyone know for sure?

"A woodcock!" Everyone must see the French restaurant scene in "Deception" (1946). Ah, Claude Rains!
