comedy

I am not a fan of slapstick silents, war or comedy,so I didn't really get into this movie. Some of the stuff seems so dumb by today's standards, and it seemed like they tried too hard to get a laugh.Enjoyed the animal scenes, however.

When you watch films from 1926 you can't compare them to 2010 "standards". Although many would hold up nicely compared to today's one trick ponies.

However, I would add that this one is not the greatest example of comedies from the time. The two-men-in-the-horse gag goes on way too long. And Chaplin is no Chaplin.

I disagree. I am usually not a fan of slapstick, but the two-men-in-the-horse had me rolling.... it just kept getting sillier & sillier.

I saw bits and pieces of this film a few months ago, and I enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to seeing the entire film.

That was one of the highlights for me. The other was the scene where Chaplin stood in front of the other soldier's legs and pretended they were his own...taking off the boot and sock, then the legs starting moving in crazy directions...meanwhile other soldiers noticed and were like 'wtf is going over there?'...lol that scene was great. And then the German officer saying "nein" to sugar in his coffee, and Chaplin thinks he asks for nine spoonsful!

I never heard of this film before but gave it a shot. Much better than I expected. 6.4/10 seems too low to me. I think the film maybe would have been fine at 75 minutes instead of 90+, but it was still well done. I give it about a 7.5 so I will have to round up.
