Just watched it tonight...

...at a revival house in the Bay Area. I went with my husband and my sister, neither of whom had seen this version before; I was the only one who had previously viewed it, and I had forgotten a great deal. This particular theater screened the Ronald Colman version for one night only (and for one show only); tomorrow's schedule has the Gary Cooper version, thus facilitating comparison and contrast between the two...or just giving viewers a chance for a double shot of Foreign Legion heroics, desert scenery, and--above all--brotherly love.

By the way, tonight's line (or queue, for any Britons out there ) for this film stretched around the corner and to the end of that street...pretty good for an 86-year-old movie.

So ironic...in comparing the two portrayers of the title role, one cannot help noting that Colman's (English) voice could not be heard, while Cooper's American voice could. Does this seem fair?

Nope. Although Gary Cooper would likely have replied, "Yup!".
