DVD

Is this film lost? Is there any way a guy can see this?

reply

I bought a videotape of this film a long time ago, but have since lost the tape. There's another version available on YouTube, with Italian titles!

Note: on the videotape version, the prison scenes "frame" the main story, which is told in flashback. The YouTube version sticks all the prison scenes at the end.

I don't know if it's on DVD, but I just saw the (uncut German) version in New York last weekend. Plus the VHS is available for rental from Facets.

I haven't checked around, but it might be available overseas (multiregion DVD players are your friend).

raredvds4sale has a decent, but not great, copy, better than the horrible VHS version.

Nina's Discount Oldies (U.S.) sells a decent-to-good quality DVD-R at an inexpensive price. It is the American version (with the prison scenes as a framing device).

I have a good quality version on VHS from years ago. It is the 101-minutes complete version with nice soundtrack, all restored for german TV with the intertitles done by the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Stiftung. Last days I digitalized the VHS to DVD and made an english language-version of it, using Magix-video-software. I love the film and want to give it as a present to an englishman.

I recently purchased the Grapevine Video DVD, and -while far from pristine- the print quality is rather good, perfectly watchable.

Must be coming out on Blu-Ray somewhere, soon. There are HD rips floating around the Net right now.

...forgot to mention: BOTH versions are showing up. Original 'and' truncated US version.
