A Beautiful Film

This was the first book of Zane Grey's that I read (thanks to Stephen King, who made it the favorite book of his main character in The Tommyknockers) - my Dad read the Grey books and I was convinced that they were JUST westerns, but of course, that's not true. I thought the end was one of the best endings I'd ever encountered. Like Mickey Spillane has a few of those. The kind that make you say WOW! out loud when no one's in the room but you (and the book.) Anyway, I enjoyed this film very much, thought Tom Mix was magnificent in all ways (looks, physique, acting, appearance) - there were many good actors/faces in this film. I particularly enjoyed reading their lips a few times. The locations were superb, the costumes well done, the soundtrack of typical silent film piano was perfection! I am a silent film fan but really haven't seen that many westerns - this was a good way to start.

I think this is a wonderful film, and true to Grey's novel. Interesting, due to the fact it's not that long of a film, and Grey's novel isn't short at all. But they managed to stay true to the spirit of the book, and it's wonderful!

Some other silent westerns that are worthwhile are Ford's 3 BAD MEN and his THE IRON HORSE.
