This turned out to be a great movie! I was a bit shocked that someone would have the chutzpah to steal another woman's so just because she was richer (but it was a French author, a French director, not Americans inserting ourselves into a French family--they can portray what they want and it did end wonderfully)....like you, I did not think he was exactly poor with his birth mother, and she had been doing a great job of raising a lovely boy with good morals. The rich woman could afford the fancy clothing and furniture, and servants, but her home was devoid of the signs of a full life. It was all rather rental--no paintings on the walls, no souvenirs as reminders of great vacations and parties....as soon as the boy left, the servants did too, and her life collapsed. She had nothing except books. But it all ended happily. The young actor was fantastic and the director displayed such a light hand filming him, you could feel how much all the adults loved this kid and wanted the best for him.
