Recasting Greed

If a remake of Greed were made today, I would cast:
Robbie Coltrane as MacTeague
Winona Ryder as Trina
Joe Pesci as Marcus

Any other choices. Hey, let's have fun with it!

One thing you miss unless you've read the book McTeague is that Trina is supposed to be much younger than McTeague (about 16, but for a film she would have to be a little older, but Kate Winslet and Anna Paquin are too old -- if you're staying true to the book).

I would cast:

John C. Reilly as McTeague
Anna Paquin as Trina
Barry Pepper as Marcus

and (these characters aren't featured in the 1924 version but are important to the book and If I were to film it I would include them):

Maria de Medeiros as Maria
Peter Stormare as Zerkow

Seeing this movie, I thought William H. Macy would make the perfect McTeague

Ben Kingsley could be a great Zerkow. See the Roman Polanski version of Oliver Twist. I'm sure he would play the part as less charming and more insane than Fagin, but could look almost exactly the same.

Winona Ryder and Joe Pesci are both a little past prime, but I like the way you think. John C. Reilly is good choice, but since I've seen the movie, I can't stop picturing Will Ferrell as McTeague (I think it's Gibson Gowland's fright wig curls.)

"Well, there it is."

I am reading the book and when Trina first meets McTeague it mentions she is about 20 and McTeague is probably about 32 or 33. They could make this in a mini series over two or three nights to have all of the story line.

I always hoped they'd do a film about the making of Greed rather than a real remake. I think Stroheim is as interesting a character as anyone in the film itself. You could have whole scenes of Greed shown but also show the struggle to get it made and then having it butchered.

Phillip Seymour Hoffman as McTeague.
