I felt like I was watching them really kill that donkey the way it fell and was convulsing and jerking around. Then it was just lying there for the longest time without moving. It really looked dead. Quite sadistic, even back then.

It's quite possible they *did* kill that donkey for the film. Animals weren't protected during moviemaking the way they are now. No one on set cared and neither did the audience.

If you look, you'll see the donkey, Marcus' horse, and Marcus himself still breathing after their supposed deaths.
