DVD!

A DVD of this film will be released by Edition Filmmuseum. From the information I got from them, it will be longer than the Kino VHS, thus I'm hoping that there will be more scenes of Marie and Else.

One of my favorite movies. I recently saw the Austria filmmuseum version that's 142 minutes long. I was going to order but with shipping the price is almost $70. The Austria version comes with a book. I haven't seen the book but assume it's in German. The Edition Filmmuseum is scheduled to release a 2 disc dvd in May 2009. No mention of price or length, but it will have English subtitles. I'm hoping it's the 175 minute version, which is why I didn't order the Austria version. There are very few movies I would spend $70 on, but this would be one of them. WARNING: The Austrian DVD is in the European PAL format (not the NTSC USA format) so it will not play in USA dvd players. It was watchable on my computer.

I received an email today from Edition Filmmuseum with more info on their upcoming DVD. It appears to be only 6 minutes longer than the Austria version I recently watched and not the 175 minute version.

DVD 1
* "Die freudlose Gasse" 1925, 148' (minutes)
* Music by Aljoscha Zimmermann
* Chapters
* Press- and Photomaterial
DVD 2
* "Der andere Blick" 1991, 130'
* "Pabst wieder sehen" 1997, 20'
* CD ROM with screenplay drafts and documentation
* Booklet with film essays

Like the Austrian dvd, this dvd is in the PAL format and will not be viewable in USA dvd players. It should be, however, be viewable on a computer or laptop. I do not know if Criterion or Kino or Flicker Alley has plans for a release. I emailed Kino but received no response. I imagine the German DVD will be in the same price range as the Austria DVD with the DVD in the $35-40 range and shipping in the $25-30 range.

Wait, there is a 175 minute version that is around and shown in museums?!
Also, I think that the Edition Filmmuseum DVD will be region 0 like their other DVDs, thus anyone can watch it. I have a few of their DVDs (Alexander Kluge films, Berlin, and some others) and I didn't have a problem with them and I live in America.

The book of the Austrian DVD is in German. I own it but hadn't time to read the book yet.

Could you tell me how many pages the book has? Is it worth reading?

According to the web site it's 220 pages. I don't speak German so I didn't buy it. Here's the web site: http://filmarchiv.at/shop/

The German edition coming out in May is at:

I recently bought an inexpensive Phillips DVD player (DVP 5990 or 5992) that will play all regions and PAL or NTSC format. Much better watching this film on a large TV rather than a pc.

First it was May, then July, now Sept. I never bothered emailing for a reason although they are usually good about returning emails if anyone wants to ask. Postings on another board indicate that a US version is also due by year's end. No idea if true.

As for Woman of Affairs, I was going to suggest ioffer, but it looks like they pulled all the bootlegs off that site.

The 2-disc set is now available to order: http://www.edition-filmmuseum.com/product_info.php/info/p81_Die-freudlose-Gasse.html

Note that this is listed as a Region 0 DVD so will be playable on all DVD players. You just need to have a TV set that is PAL compatible.
