Rose Bowl?

Where were the football scenes filmed? It looks a lot like the Rose Bowl. Does anybody know which teams were playing in the stock footage that is used? I'm fascinated by early football.

I thought the same thing when i watched the film. It sure does look like the Rose Bowl to me as well. Under the trivia section for this film it say the footage was shot at Cal-Berkley during the east-west game. Still looks like the Rose Bowl to me.

According to the commentary, different parts of the film were shot at different games. Some game footage was shot at the Rose Bowl before it was decided to have Harold give up his jersey. The shots from that first day which featured Harold had to be replaced with later shots taken at the Cal-Berkeley game. IIRC, even that game didn't provide all the necessary footage, so there were still more shots filmed at another Rose Bowl.

I saw The Freshman with live organ accompaniment at the Stanford Theatre last night.
The organist introduced the film, and said that most of the game footage was quickly shot during half-time at Memorial Stadium in Berkeley at the UC-Stanford game, hence the huge capacity crowd visible on screen. He also said that supplementary shots were done later in an empty Rose Bowl.

At least two shots were filmed at Berkeley because Tightwad Hill is visible in both. Then it was almost brand new, having been excavated a couple of years before The Freshman was filmed, with only a few trees. The Rose Bowl is visible in an aerial clip, and the west side press boxes of the Rose Bowl on some of the ground level shots on the field. So...both.
