WTF? So, you're telling me that someone would try to kill an individual by placing him into a cellar with a bear, and the next moment, accept him as your guard for the night (along with his own daughter agreeing with it). One of the most contrived plot developments I've ever seen...

As we were clearly shown in a previous incident, the bear is meant to terrify guests, not kill them. In this case, the 'tutor' kept his cool in front of the bear, and then calmly killed the animal when it broke free and threatened the host's daughter. This is what won his approval of the tutor's courage, and this is why he chose him as guard when everyone else in the household 'un-volunteered.'
