American strategy in the woods

I didn't quite get the American strategy in the first combat. The soldiers were just walking towards the enemy bullets. Was it really like this in WW1 and if so, what did they expected to achieve with such a suicidal march?

Is this your first WWI film? The strategy for just about every WWI film is to walk towards the enemy while they shoot machine guns at them. It was a war of attrition, but I wouldn't hold the tactics and strategy of the battle scenes against this film because it was made in 1925, just 7 years after the war had ended and in a time when filmmaking was still very new.
