Stuff

A seemingly important quote from Tashu, the shady former advisor to the emperor, when asked what the remaining officers should do.

"No Sith remains. And the lone Jedi that exists--the son of Anakin Skywalker--possesses an untouchable soul. At least for now. We must instead move towards the dark side. Palpatine felt that the universe beyond the edges of our map was where his power came from. Over the many years he, with our aid, sent men and women beyond known space. They built labs and communication stations on distant moons, asteroids, out there in the wilds. We must follow them. Retreat from the Galaxy. Go out beyond the veil of stars. We must seek the source of the dark side like a man looking for a wellspring of water."

Yeah, I was keeping special tabs on everything that guy said, but this is the most significant.

Other than that, he's kind of a broken record of "let's all EMBRACE THE DARK SIDE GUYS" and "you know how we'll solve this problem? DARK SIDE." Specifically has no powers, though

[–]Xeta1 8 points 18 hours ago

Ick, even the mention of moving toward the dark side in the beginning there was enough for me. This dude wanting to be a dark side warrior seems weird. But he's probably some crazy Palpatine cultist (right?), so it might make some sense.

I think they mentioned he was a historian or something, but he was close to Palpatine.

I sort of just imagined him as one of those creepy old dudes hanging out with Palpatine in ROTJ? Guys that are probably aware that ol' Sheev is a evil space wizard, but willing to go along with it, even if they couldn't practice themselves.

However, this guy is using the concept of "Balance" in the Force being an equal representation of the Jedi and the Sith. Which, until we are told differently in the new canon, is directly contrary what was established by Lucas; That the Darkside was a "Cancer" on the Force that threw it out of Balance and that the Force is naturally in Balance.

The energy of The Force flows through the Galaxy like a river, in a huge cycle. The final episodes of Clone Wars supports this, talking of the flow of energy between life and death, and the Living Force and the Cosmic Force. If you think of this flow of energy like a river, the Jedi and those who are in harmony with The Will of the Force strive to flow with it. They don't take, they receive.

However, the Sith are not in harmony with The Will of the Force. They strive to Impose their own Will on The Force. The analogy being where a Jedi would be embraced by the River and flow with it, the Sith would be the ones who dig a giant hole, build a dam and try to divert as much water as possible into their own lake so no one else can have any.

So now you have "The River" aka The Force, weaker because of this. And water that's being siphoned off into Lake Sith will start to stagnate and corrupt and putrefy. The Force is now out of Balance. The only way to return it to Balance is to remove Lake Sith and return it to the Flow.

I think the majority of the people who use the Jedi/Sith equality meaning "Balance" are people who just think the Bad Guys are 'cooler' than the good guys. Or those who want to have the boom-boom-flashy-flashy powers (like Force Lightning -- which is literally corrupted life energy used as a weapon that just-so-happens to LOOK like lightning) without having the pay the price of being corrupted by it.

If the new canon decides to retcon this and go with the Jedi/Sith Equality angle then I hope they explain it better - because, in my opinion, that concept is by far the weaker of the two. I've never seen the depth that people supposedly see in the idea that the Darkside and Lightside have to co-exist. I think it just helps them feel better about wanting to be Evil.

The Clone Wars explored the same concept of eternal Jedi/Sith coexistence resulting in "balance" during Season 3 Episode 15, 16 and 17. It basically said facilitating that peace, through coexistence, was the age-old purpose of The Chosen One.

This correlates with J.J. referencing the Nazi's retreating to Argentina to avoid charges of war crimes. Perhaps, the remnants of the Empire reorganize "beyond" the Outer Rim in Uncharted Territory and later become the First Order. This raises many questions: Does this mean that Snoke is a member of the Acolytes of the Beyond? How does the Knights of Ren factor into this? Are members of the First Order force users?

The source of the Force and/or midichlorians has been explored in the Fate of the Jedi novels, which are no longer canon, and the Clone Wars animated series, which is.

What lies beyond the galaxy has been explored in Outbound Flight, Heir to the Jedi, and the Yuuzhan Vong arc, none of which are now canon.

Mothma is Chancellor. Immediately moves to relinquish Palpatine's emergency powers and "demilitarize our government so galactic war cannot happen like this again." Plans to cut military by 90% when they are able to confirm an end to the war. She wants to help fund smaller militarized operations against the Empire forces. She has some advisors that agree with this line of thinking, but others that think this will lead to a series of smaller civil wars

There's a Tatooine interlude. They mention that there is still a power vacuum from Jabba's death.

In it, a guy named Adwin Charu (working for the red key company) goes on a Jawa Sandcrawler looking for high quality goods for his employer, not the trash they sell to just anybody. Meets a guy named Cobb Vanth, seems to have local knowledge. Cobb helps negotiate with the Jawas to show Adwin the rare goods. Amongst the rare goods are Hutt artifacts, parts of a sail barge, all burnt, twisted, and wrecked.

Also amongst the rare goods is a box. Adwin opens it, and it contains a full set of Mandalorian armor, "pitted and pocked as if with some kind of acid. Been through hell and back."

Cobb claims it for himself, saying he is a newly appointed lawman. Cobb shoots Adwin and tells him to tell his boss to leave the sector or come after him and his "new--well, new to me--suit of armor." He leaves.

So they mention Tatooine and Jakku both. Absolutely 100% confirmed that they are not the same planet.
permalink

parent

[–]Slappamedoo 12 points 18 hours ago

This was confirmed well before this book started selling early.

The distinguishing factor is that Jakku's economy is based around scrap from the wreckage of the great battle that occurred above it, and Tatooine I guess in more illegal trades and moisture farming. And Jakku is supposedly more desolate. Tatooine at least has cities and civilization. Jakku from what I've read is just outposts and small camps.

parent

[–]ReverendY[S] 3 points 18 hours ago

From how it seemed, there was no "great battle" above Jakku yet. The man in the interlude chapter came there recently to specifically get away from the war.

Rest of what you said seemed right.

A Kubaz named Ooblamon is selling a red lightsaber in a trashed tenement in Taris. In the room is graffiti, and the author mentions a stencil of Vader's helmet with a phrase beneath it reading "VADER LIVES."

Three people try to by the lightsaber. A pale girl, and two in black robes. Faces concealed.

He asks who they are, she says "We are adherents. Acolytes of the Beyond."

He asks if they are dark side fanatics or just kids who want toys. She tell him to "judge us not, thief."

He warns them not to try to kill him once they get the saber. She says "we are not violent. Not yet."

He asks what they plan to do with it, she says "we will destroy it, so that it can be returned to its master in death."

When they leave, the merchant's assistant asks if that was really Vader's saber, and he responds with a "who knows, who cares?"
