that Madame Poussot was a man in drag? The cast list indicates a woman, but she had a definite man's moustache, not just feminine fuzz. Maybe she was made up to look like a man in drag. And in her first scene, she's chatting up a decidedly effeminant man.

Yes! I've just seen this movie for the first time, and that's exactly what I thought, too. I assumed that this might have been a way of suggesting cross-dressing and homosexuality without actually showing it because the cast members were technically of the correct gender. Few audience members of 1924 would have been sophisticated enough to get the reference, but I think it's definitely there.

She could of been a part time sideshow performer,or the facial hair was meant to convey a hard,masculine women being the boss of a sleazy bar.The lad beside her was definitely a very effeminate gay man.
