So many beautful images in this movie.

The cinematography of this was sooooo beautiful and there were so many iconic images. I kept seeing stuff that I wanted as a background for my desktop or as an avatar.

Man, I don't know where to start. Too many brilliant ideas per minute. When I realized Rollo was going to the bottom of the sea in a diving bell I was like, "You've got to be kidding me." I about pissed myself laughing at the swordfish fight. And then when Rollo emerges from the ocean, slowly walking out onto the beach in his diving bell... that's when I said "this is now my favorite movie." Of course I say that every time I see an awesome movie.

I missed the first ten minutes. Was the submarine a callback from the beginning or was it just a random occurance? It doesn't really matter either way, but I actually hope the latter cause that would make it more absurd. When the two leads were drifting out there in the endless ocean, SURE to be doomed, I couldn't help but be reminded of "Open Water". And as all hope is lost... ABSURDISM saves the day! Those are the kinds of ideas that make me cry more than just flat-out sad stuff... and then I bust a gut when Rollo got tossed off the sub by the captain opening the hatch.

I also shed a single tear at the image of Rollo and Betsey falling asleep in their sailor outfits, the ruined wet cards strewn out on the table in front of them.

Also, the music in this movie was sooo good, especially the scene when it started raining. There was just something so magical about the music and action in that particular scene.

I thought the ending was rather abrupt, but I guess there wasn't much more to be done.

I also loved that image of Buster Keaton emerging from the water in his diving suit...very cool, funny movie overall. I can't get enough of his silents!

To answer your question : the submarine was not a callback and its appearance was totally unexpected.

I gotta say it is one of the biggest surprise ending I ever saw in a movie!
