WOW

For maybe the past 2-3 years my interest in Silent Film as sky-rocketed.

I just watched the 1993 Unrestored Export version on Disk 2 of the Kino dvd.

WOW

This was perhaps the greatest movie I have seen in a long time. I am having trouble finding the words to describe how awesome it was. This is just my opinion of course. The soundtrack, the camera angles and movements....the story.....all excellent. I wish they still made movies this good now-a-days.

I just bought the Kino German Expressionism dvd collection. I hope these films are just as good (Caligari of course)

Yes, a wonderful film. Personally, I liked Nosferatu and Faust (both, of course, by Murnau) even more than The Last Laugh. I have trouble picking my top 10 silent films without Murnau taking 4-5 of the spots!

For Nosferatu, the restored Kino version is by far the best, including the restored tinting.

You might also try Sadie Thompson (Gloria Swanson, dir. by C.B. DeMille), The Wind (Lillian Gish, dir. by Victor Sjostrom) & Passion of Jeanne de Arc (dir. by Carl Theodor Dryer)...all tip-top silents. Napoleon, by Abel Gance, is also outstanding, though very long.

I'm glad your interest in silents has skyrocketed. Mine did the same a few years ago!

I found a two-tape VHS set somewhere on ebay or amazon.com.

I haven't seen it anywhere on DVD either.

The Last Laugh is undoubtedly one of the great silent films. As far as I'm concerned there is far more advancement in cinematic techniques in that film than Citizen Kane which is oft credited for this. Jannings also presents possibly the most broken man in the history of cinema. It just a shame about those final 17 minutes. From the reviews I have read he was forced to film that ending. Such a shame. The first 70 minutes are masterpiece. Yet still better than Dr Mabuse which tends to drag in its second part.

The reason I love Dr. Mabuse probably has a lot to do with the fact that I became obsessed with it and watched it 4 times. Obviously everyone can't be bothered to do the same.
