Why was it such a prestigious job?

Was this a prestigious job for him because he lived in a very poor area, or was this a prestigious job in general? Most people today would not be impressed by someone bragging about a doorman job where all of your work is unskilled labor and heavy lifting, so its interesting to see the much different attitude that was shown in this movie.

I think it was a very prestigious job. The doorman is the first impression and last impression a hotel gives its patrons, and they need to be upstanding and courteous.
