What?

No Message boards for this film. I saw it a year or two ago at the George Eastman House and it was so beautiful. The composition, the beautiful contrasts of black and white, the story, with its heart-felt and tiny subject and ridiculous ending. A true masterpiece!

I just heard "The Last Laugh" by Mark Knopfler...famous musician behind Dire Straits, currently working solo...and had to watch this film again. He told me that it was one of his favorite films...it moved me to tears the first time I saw it.

Ridiculous ending??? Hmmmph.

Keep smiling. ===8^)

The movie is great but, indeed, the ending is ridiculous. Two additional comments:
1. RC's description of Knopfler: he stops short of adding that Knopfler is a guitar player. :)
2. The old man's niece (?), at the beginning of the movie. Two of the best scenes in history of cinema: (a) you feel her pride as she dusts the old man's uniform; (b) the incredible sensuality you sense when she takes the cakes from the oven.

I love this film. What even amazes me is that ppl I know, who hates watching old silent movies, loves this one. No overdone acting, no words, everything is told by bodylanguage. Shows how great the actors had to be, and what strong directing had to be done.

Yes, Murnau is one of my favorite directors.... Love him! But Jannings is doing a great job in this film.
