What a great soundtrack

It was very moving, lots of expression. I wouldn't mind having a CD of it at all. It's the first time i watched a movie with no spoken words.

tell me if you find it!

The first silent film I watched was Daydreams made by Keaton in the early 1920s. I wish it was this one though. A true example of perfected cinematic art.

I take it you're on about the soundtrack on the eureka release? I'm not sure if its composed from the original score but its certainly brilliant!

reply

It is not the original score. Most of the original scores to silent films are lost :-(

Have you seen Sunrise by Murnau? It is even better than Der Letzte Mann.

The truth is that only the biggest releases ever had original scores composed for them. Metropolis for example had a soundtrack composed by one of the leading composers of the day(an original copy of this survives and has important screen notes which have helped fill in missing parts of the film).

Many films simply used stock music for the situations on screen, but I imagine Der Letzte Mann would have had an original score - more than likely lost.

Why I wrote that much just to agree with you is beyond me :|

Yeah Sunrise is a masterpiece, but I love Der Letze Mann purely because of its lack of titles. Cinematic art at its best.

I agree with you, it is a great visual storytelling. I also thought Phantom (Murnau: 1922) was fantastic in this sense, even though it does have titles. It's not one of Murnau's best (mostly because of the story) but the film language is breathtaking.

I've never been able to get a hold of Phantom yet - I'll check out the university library in the morning and see what I can find. I think its the only Murnau film I havn't seen apart from Tabu.

With the exception of all his lost films of course...

You can get Phantom on Amazon.

And you can get the following films on ebay and/or from collectors:
City Girl
Der Brennende Acker
The Haunted Castle
Journey Into the Night

Dear Thao,

How "fairly close to what you intended to say" is now this very comment of yours?
:-)

I did find "Der Brennende Acker" on ebay, but I've never seen "Journey Into the Night" (Der Gang in die Nacht) or "The Haunted Castle" (Schloss Vogeloed) on ebay, although I check quite regularly... Maybe you could tell me, what collectors you have in mind? I would apprecciate it...
Thank you! ;-)

And by the way, this is what I intended to say :-)

I loved the soundtrack, very good indeed

When there's no more room in hell, The dead will walk the earth...

....One of my favorites. Now I have to look up which other Silents are scored by Timothy Brock and the Olympia Chamber Orchestra.

....Is it Brock's work? I saw him listed on Amazon.com. but not in the IMDB.
